The Unsightly Truth of Laser Vision Correction
LASIK Surgery Makes Healthy Eyes Sick
Medical negligence, Government corruption, deliberate, dangerous surgical procedures, this book has it all. Never agree to corrective surgery before listening to this book. Learn from those directly involved, prime witness accounts like you have never seen before.
This book charts the harrowing primary account of Dr Morris Waxler, vision scientist, Neuropsychologist, and former Science Manager (Branch Chief) of the PRK/LASIK team at the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) who has spent many years trying to end the corrupt, harmful, and sometimes fatal consequences of LASIK eye surgery. You will hear directly from Paula Cofer, founder of The LASIK Complications Support Group, a victim of LASIK eye surgery and now lifelong activist. Dr Edward Boshnick has spent over 25 years caring for patients with severe eye damage, visual defects, and lifelong suffering due to this dangerous, flawed practice. Dr MacKay describes how she uncovered the dangers of LASIK surgery, how she has campaigned to bring it to an end, she has faced many attempts to silence her. Dr MacKay will not be silenced; she has written her own memoir (Making the Cut) exposing the corruption and dangerous procedure.
Yet, even to this day, with the corpus of knowledge available to legislators, and surgeons, the harmful procedure continues unabated, unchallenged by those in power that could put a stop to it. Why? the answer is clear: $$$, it is true, money is right at the heart of this problem. Surgeons are becoming very wealthy, US Government receives its healthy share of the proceeds, all whilst upwards of 60% of patients suffer from serious and most painful eye and vision defects. Healthy eyes are deliberately being made sick. Thousands of patients are being cared for by legitimate, caring, competent and decent health professionals, but it is fruitless, the conditions cannot be reversed, and the corrupt practice of LASIK surgery continues.

Dr Morris Waxler, vision scientist, Neuropsychologist, and former Science Manager (Branch Chief) of the PRK/LASIK team at the Food and Drug Administration(FDA).
LASIK is unnecessary surgery performed on healthy eyes to eliminate the need for distance glasses or contact lenses. It does not prevent or treat eye disease. Eyes are essential. Those undergoing the surgery see perfectly well with glasses, so customers would not want LASIK surgery if it had a high risk of causing serious eye disorders. In fact, the risk of severe chronic complications from LASIK is at least 30% = Donnenfeld, Hovanesian, Albietz, DePaiva, Shoja,Tuisku, Denoyer.
LASIK surgery is performed in every developed country in the world. Since 40 million people in the world have had LASIK, at least 12 million people are suffering today from these life-destroying complications. This is a huge public health problem.
LASIK-related disorders are multiple, disastrous, permanent, and untreatable. They include blindness, life-long pain, and disability, which, in a few dozen cases, have led to suicide.
This book will recount the efforts by many LASIK surgeons and the FDA to convince customers into having LASIK surgery by not warning them about the known serious chronic eye disorders.
The rise of LASIK did not happen overnight. We show how LASIK rose to prominence, and how the FDA went along with the industry.
The FDA website is very positive on LASIK. This, to put it mildly, is an unusual partnership between the agency and industry. We will provide evidence, and then you, the readers, will decide if FDA and the LASIK industry are fully transparent and honest about the risks of LASIK surgery.
Not all LASIK complications occur immediately after surgery. Moreover, the word “complications” does not adequately describe the unremitting decreased vision, eye weakness and chronic pain that occur far too often after LASIK surgery. Patients who are suffering from “complications” once had healthy eyes. They are now trying to live life with a chronic, untreatable disability. Often, seemingly innocuous post-LASIK symptoms – a slight eye itch that persists or a bit of blurriness, are signs of impending chronic eye disorders.
This book will tell the stories of LASIK-damaged patients who had no idea of the risk they were running before they had surgery. They describe their chronic eye disorders within these pages, while the FDA refuses to act. Also, it is the history of heroes – Paula Cofer, Dr. Cynthia MacKay, Dr. Edward Boshnick, and others – who have helped, and are helping, victims of LASIK rebuild their eyes and their lives.
Unfortunately, many LASIK surgeons and FDA do not adequately warn customers about these life-long eye disorders. Instead, they sell the short-term benefit of improved distance vision.
The LASIK surgeons’ criterion of success is patients being able to read the 20/40 line on the eye chart in their offices. However, a high percentage of these “successes” are suffering from pain, distorted vision, halos and glare at night, and many other problems described in this book.
The truth is that LASIK causes permanent eye disorders. That is why 5% are dissatisfied with the surgery a year post-surgery, and, 7 years after having LASIK, 55% say they wish they had never had the procedure. In this book, LASIK-damaged patients will tell you about their lived experiences with the unremitting eye disorders of LASIK.

THE UNSIGHTLY TRUTH OF LASER VISION CORRECTION
LASIK SURGERY MAKES HEALTHY EYES SICK
by Morris Waxler
A convincing if occasionally tedious case against LASIK eye surgery.
Waxler indicts the popular vision-correction procedure.
In these pages, the author sounds the alarm about LASIK eye surgery, a procedure that uses a laser to reshape the cornea and eliminate the need for glasses used to see at a distance. In the U.S. alone, hundreds of thousands of people get LASIK surgery every year. Waxler lays out the massive drawbacks that are often downplayed by the doctors performing the procedure. Per the author, a condition called corneal neuropathic pain frequently results, caused by the way LASIK shaves and thins the cornea and leaves behind scar tissue. Waxler carefully explains the biology involved, noting, for instance, that in dim light the pupil dilates, which isn’t a problem in a healthy eye, where the cornea is curved, but it becomes increasingly troublesome when the cornea has been reshaped to focus light directly on the retina. Referencing an extensive series of professional studies, the author elaborates on how the procedure can lead to severe headaches, render the cornea painfully sensitive to various things (including light, dust, and even blinking), and ultimately prove ineffective, since roughly half the patients who undergo it regress to pre-surgery vision levels (or worse) within seven years. Waxler includes testimonies and case studies documenting dozens of people who’ve had the surgery and experienced some or all of these side effects, including the famous golfer Tiger Woods, who had the surgery in 1999 and experienced painful regression eight years later. These case studies and personal accounts, along with detailed source documentation, make up the bulk of Waxler’s book, which is authoritative but not particularly engaging. For long stretches, the text reads like a dossier prepared for a class-action attorney, which is a shame, since Waxler’s knowledge and passion are evident throughout. His main target is LASIK, but he stresses that his call is broader: “Just say no to all ‘vision correction’ surgery on healthy eyes,” he urges his readers. “Surgery on healthy eyes makes them sick, forever. Any benefits are merely temporary.”
